Phil Collins - Face Value - 1981

Face Value .... in combination with his personal life

Collins wrote the lyrics of the album after divorcing his first wife Andrea in 1979.
The opening track 'In the air tonight' is about the anger he felt after his divorce.
All the other original songs seem to be 'messages' to his first wife in an attempt to lure her back to him or at least to process his feelings. To face the truth!?

Within this perspective Face Value can be meant as: Look at me; this is me, this is how I Feel, this is what I'm worth! Most probably the Album Art and the Album Title reflect both career & personal life. Face Value boosted Phil's solo career and his second solo album opens with 'I don't care anymore'. Project succeeded - Job is done! Nevertheless - Phil's face became his trademark for later work ...
